When shopping for an e-bike, you’re bombarded with numbers like 48V, 13Ah, and 624Wh. While these terms can look intimidating, they are the key to understanding your bike’s performance and range.

In simple terms, these numbers tell you two things: how fast your bike will go and how far it will go. By demystifying the terminology, you can make a smarter purchase and have a much better idea of what to expect from your battery.

1. Voltage (V): The Power and Speed

Voltage (V) is the electrical potential or "pressure" that pushes the current through your motor. Think of it like water pressure in a hose: the higher the pressure, the stronger the flow.  

What it Affects: Voltage primarily determines the power and maximum speed of your e-bike. A higher-voltage system (like 52V compared to 48V) will generally deliver a more aggressive, punchier acceleration and a slightly higher top speed.  

Common E-Bike Voltages:

36V: Common in entry-level bikes and smaller folding bikes. Offers lower power and range.  

48V: The industry standard for most mid-range and commuter e-bikes. Offers a good balance of power and range.  

52V: Increasingly popular, offering noticeably more torque and faster acceleration than 48V systems.  

72V (and higher): Typically found in high-performance or off-road e-motorbikes.  

2. Amp-Hours (Ah): The Fuel Tank Size

Amp-hours (Ah) is a measure of how much electrical charge the battery can store. Think of it as the size of your fuel tank.  

What it Affects: Amp-hours determine the endurance and potential range of your e-bike. A higher Ah rating means the battery can deliver a certain amount of current for a longer time, resulting in a longer distance before needing a recharge.  

Comparison: A 48V/10Ah battery has a smaller "fuel tank" than a 48V/20Ah battery and will run out of charge sooner.

3. Watt-Hours (Wh): The True Measure of Range

Watt-hours (Wh) is the most important number for estimating your range. It’s the total energy storage capacity of the battery. It’s calculated by multiplying the Voltage (V) by the Amp-hours (Ah):

Watt — hours (Wh) = Volts(V) x Amp — hours (Ah)

What it Affects: Wh is the definitive measure of how much energy your battery can hold. This is the most accurate way to compare the range between two different batteries.

The Best Comparison Tool: If you are comparing a 48V/13Ah battery to a 52V/10Ah battery, which one will go farther?

48V x 13Ah = 624Wh

52V x 10Ah = 520Wh

• The 48V//13Ah battery will have the longer range, even though the 52V system is more powerful.
